A fresh perspective

Hey my name’s Mel Yencken. I’m the most recent (and youngest) edition to Square Circle Triangle’s design team.

I’m fresh from graduating at Monash, Caulfield, this being my first year out and after working with SCT for 4 months I hardly recognize my former self… in a good way!

Being the only in-house print designer - apart from Brad (my scary scary boss and SCT’s creative director) - I’ve had access to projects most graduates only dream about - especially considering 10 people from my graduate year of 70 students have design positions.

The best lesson I’ve learnt so far?
Is that the most important thing when you’re working with clients, is to keep them informed about the process, and keep them excited. If they love the work and understand we’re on target, they trust you and with that comes more creative freedom.

My favourite aspect of the job?
Working at SCT has been a lot more hands on than I expected. I’ve been involved in the creative strategy behind our developing brands as well as the execution.

Recently while creating a brand proposal for a property development Brad and I were brainstorming ways to capture the clients’ imagination and win the job. After developing an extensive written proposal, we thought about including something powerful and tangible to engage them. Our solution? Draw the proposed “idea” six feet tall in chalk on the footpath outside the studio. When the clients arrived for the meeting they got excited, because suddenly they could visualise the brand and its impact at a large scale (which was one of our key marketing strategies). Sound crazy? Yep… but it worked!
